Miscellaneous 342 Corrections Cover image Multiple sclerosis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of microglial cells (round) ingesting oligodendrocytes (branched). This is the process thought to occur in multiple sclerosis (MS). Oligodendrocytes form insulating myelin sheaths around nerve axons in the central nervous system. Microglia normally ingest cell debris and bacteria as part of the body’s immune response. In MS they attack oligodendrocytes, possibly triggered by a virus in people with hereditary susceptibility. Destruction of myelin sheaths leads to loss of nerve function. Symptoms include unsteady gait, visual and speech defects, and paralysis. Magnifi cation: x670 when 10cm wide.

The Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome According to Different Criteria and its Associated Factors in Type 2 Diabetic Patients in Kerman, Iran
Metabolic syndrome is highly prevalent in type 2 diabetics and is a strong risk factor for cardiovascular diseases in such patients. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome according to the three criteria of ATPIII, IDF and the new criteria for metabolic syndrome diagnosis in Kerman, Iran. This cross-sectional study was performed on 950 diabetic type 2 patient...
متن کاملUnusual fluorescent granulomas and myonecrosis in Danio rerio infected by the microsporidian pathogen Pseudoloma neurophilia.
Abstract Zebrafish are a powerful model organism to study disease. Like other animal models, Danio rerio colonies are at risk of pathogenic infection. Microsporidia, a group of intracellular fungus-like parasites, are one potential threat. Microsporidian spores germinate and spread causing pathological changes in the central nervous system, skeletal muscle, and other anatomic sites. Infection c...
متن کاملThe common neural parasite Pseudoloma neurophilia is associated with altered startle response habituation in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio): Implications for the zebrafish as a model organism.
The zebrafish's potential as a model for human neurobehavioral research appears nearly limitless despite its relatively recent emergence as an experimental organism. Since the zebrafish has only been part of the research community for a handful of decades, pathogens from its commercial origins continue to plague laboratory stocks. One such pathogen is Pseudoloma neurophilia, a common microparas...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Nerve Conduction Studies and Electromyography Findings in Patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common neuropathy in the general population. Nerve conduction studies are among the standard methods for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome. Electromyography is painful and unpleasant, and if nerve conduction studies can be used to diagnose axonal injury in carpal tunnel syndrome, electromyography might be replaced. Objectives: This study aimed t...
متن کاملHypoparathyroidism as the First Mani-Festation of Kearns-Sayre Syndrome: A Case Report
Kearns-Sayre syndrome is a mitochondrial myopathy, which was first described by Tomas Kearn in 1958. Diagnostic symptoms of this condition include retinitis pigmentosa, chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia, and one or more of the following factors: cardiac conduction system diseases, cerebellar ataxia, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with protein content above 100 mg/dL. The nature of thi...
